IBM: LUNAR LANDING/ NEXT LEVEL TRACKING

VVOX was asked by Ogilvy USA to execute an interactive installation for the 50th year anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing. Our team has created an entire pipeline for markerless tracking and game engine, photo realistic graphics to be experienced by thousands during the three day activation at the Oculus, NYC.

THE ASK

IBM helped astronauts reach the moon in 1969. Now 50 years later in 2019 Volvox Labs partnered with Ogilvy and IBM and provide an augmented experience to do the same for guests in celebration of the Apollo 11 moon landing’s 50th anniversary. We brought this historic experience to reality and took over the Oculus in New York City. Guests were invited to step onto the IBM Moon Walk simulator to experience themselves as an astronaut on the lunar surface.

The challenge was achieving a photo-realistic, real-time rendering combined with markerless, machine learning-driven tracking within the transportation hub, the Oculus in NYC.

Our team has gone through multiple iterations for the best solution to achieving the lunar surface dynamics and keeping the system responsive and agile.
